Details

CVE-2023-25194 (Apache Kafka) is a High (8.8) vulnerability: Apache Kafka Connect RCE. This entry ships a detection-only proof-of-concept (PoC), a Docker test lab, and ready-to-deploy detection and prevention rules (Snort, YARA, Nginx, Apache) — see Detection and prevention below. Attribute Value
CVE ID CVE-2023-25194
CVSS Score 8.8
Product Apache Kafka
Type Deserialization / RCE

Description

Remote code execution vulnerability due to unsafe deserialization during connector configuration via Kafka Connect REST API. Attackers can exploit this to execute arbitrary code or cause denial of service.

Affected Versions

  • Apache Kafka 2.3.0 through 3.3.2

Mitigation

  1. Upgrade to Apache Kafka 3.4.0+
  2. Restrict access to Kafka Connect REST API
  3. Disable JndiLoginModule if not needed

Verification Process

The PoC uses a multi-stage verification approach:

Step 1: Product/Version Detection (Passive)

[*] Query target endpoint
[*] Detect product signatures and extract version
[*] Check if version is in vulnerable range

Step 2: Active Vulnerability Testing

Method Description Detection
Error-based Tests for error messages indicating vulnerability Error indicators in response
Timing-based Measures response delay with payload Response time significantly longer
Response-based Checks for expected patterns in response Vulnerability indicators present
