Attribute Value
CVE ID CVE-2023-46604
CVSS Score 10.0
Product Apache ActiveMQ
Type Remote Code Execution

Description

Apache ActiveMQ is vulnerable to RCE via deserialization of ClassPathXmlApplicationContext.

Affected Versions

  • Apache ActiveMQ 5.18.x before 5.18.3
  • Apache ActiveMQ 5.17.x before 5.17.6
  • Apache ActiveMQ before 5.16.7
  • Apache ActiveMQ Legacy OpenWire Module before 5.18.3

Mitigation

  1. Upgrade to ActiveMQ 5.18.3, 5.17.6, or 5.16.7
  2. Restrict network access to OpenWire port (61616)
  3. Use firewall rules to limit access

Verification Process

The PoC uses a multi-stage verification approach:

Step 1: Product/Version Detection (Passive)

[*] Query target endpoint
[*] Detect product signatures and extract version
[*] Check if version is in vulnerable range

Step 2: Active Vulnerability Testing

Method Description Detection
Error-based Tests for error messages indicating vulnerability Error indicators in response
Timing-based Measures response delay with payload Response time significantly longer
Response-based Checks for expected patterns in response Vulnerability indicators present
