Vulnerability Type Use-After-Free / Privilege Escalation
Exploitation Status Actively Exploited (Ransomware)

Description

CVE-2024-1086 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's netfilter component (nf_tables). The flaw allows a local attacker to escalate privileges to root by exploiting a double-free bug in the nft_verdict_init() function.

Affected Versions

  • Linux Kernel 5.14 through 6.6
  • Various Linux distributions using affected kernels

Technical Details

Root Cause

The vulnerability exists in the netfilter nf_tables component. The nft_verdict_init() function allows positive values as drop error within the hook verdict, causing a double-free condition.

Attack Vector

  1. Local attacker with unprivileged access
  2. Triggers double-free via netfilter operations
  3. Exploits heap corruption
  4. Gains root privileges

Impact

  • Local privilege escalation to root
  • Container escape potential
  • Used in ransomware attacks
  • Complete system compromise

Mitigation

  1. Update to patched kernel version
  2. Apply vendor security patches
  3. Disable unprivileged user namespaces if not needed
  4. Monitor for exploitation attempts

Verification Process

The PoC uses a multi-stage verification approach:

Step 1: Product/Version Detection (Passive)

[*] Query target endpoint
[*] Detect product signatures and extract version
[*] Check if version is in vulnerable range

Step 2: Active Vulnerability Testing

Method Description Detection
Error-based Tests for error messages indicating vulnerability Error indicators in response
Timing-based Measures response delay with payload Response time significantly longer
Response-based Checks for expected patterns in response Vulnerability indicators present
