Attribute Value
CVE ID CVE-2024-36401
CVSS Score 9.8
Product GeoServer
Type Remote Code Execution

Description

Remote code execution vulnerability in GeoServer through OGC filter evaluation allowing execution of arbitrary code via property name evaluation.

Affected Versions

  • GeoServer < 2.23.6
  • GeoServer 2.24.0 - 2.24.3

Mitigation

  1. Upgrade to GeoServer 2.23.6 or 2.24.4
  2. Remove gt-complex extension if not needed
  3. Implement WAF rules

Verification Process

The PoC uses a multi-stage verification approach:

Step 1: Product/Version Detection (Passive)

[*] Query target endpoint
[*] Detect product signatures and extract version
[*] Check if version is in vulnerable range

Step 2: Active Vulnerability Testing

Method Description Detection
Error-based Tests for error messages indicating vulnerability Error indicators in response
Timing-based Measures response delay with payload Response time significantly longer
Response-based Checks for expected patterns in response Vulnerability indicators present
