Severity Critical
CVSS Score 9.1
Affected Product Gogs Git Server
Vulnerability Type Symlink Bypass / File Overwrite / RCE
Exploitation Status Actively Exploited (Unpatched)

Description

CVE-2025-8110 is a symlink bypass vulnerability in Gogs that allows authenticated users to overwrite files outside the repository, leading to Remote Code Execution. This vulnerability is a bypass of a previously patched RCE (CVE-2024-55947).

Affected Versions

  • Gogs all versions (vulnerability remains unpatched in main branch as of December 2025)

Technical Details

Root Cause

The vulnerability exists in how Gogs handles symlinks during file operations. An authenticated user can create a symbolic link within a repository that points to files outside the repository root, allowing arbitrary file overwrite.

Attack Vector

  1. Attacker creates/modifies a repository
  2. Creates symlink pointing to sensitive system file
  3. Pushes content through the symlink
  4. Overwrites target file (e.g., authorized_keys, crontab)
  5. Achieves RCE via overwritten file

Impact

  • Arbitrary file overwrite on server
  • Remote code execution
  • Server compromise
  • Supershell malware deployment observed

Timeline

Date Event
2025-07-10 First exploitation observed
2025-07-15 Supershell malware discovered
2025-11-01 Second wave of attacks
2025-12-10 Still unpatched

Mitigation

  1. Migrate to Gitea or other maintained alternatives
  2. Restrict repository creation permissions
  3. Implement file system monitoring
  4. Run Gogs in isolated container with limited permissions

Verification Process

The PoC uses a multi-stage verification approach:

Step 1: Product/Version Detection (Passive)

[*] Query target endpoint
[*] Detect product signatures and extract version
[*] Check if version is in vulnerable range

Step 2: Active Vulnerability Testing

Method Description Detection
Error-based Tests for error messages indicating vulnerability Error indicators in response
Timing-based Measures response delay with payload Response time significantly longer
Response-based Checks for expected patterns in response Vulnerability indicators present
